In the world of entertainment, passion is the motivator but ambition is the catalyst. For Nicole Plantin, her love of music fueled her desire to not only enter the game, but also leave her mark on it.
Nicole’s career has been a reflection of her passion, tenacity and innate ability to understand the Artist journey. Her artist relations skills have led to her being tapped as a trusted team member and collaborator, as evidenced by the culture shifting visionaries she has had the opportunity to work for and alongside of. Working with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (collectively known as The Neptunes) as they launched their label Star Trak Entertainment, released classic albums, and introduced their fashion brand Billionarie Boys Club/Ice Cream set her foundation. During that time she sat directly at the intersection of music, culture and fashion, working with a boundary pushing roster of artists such as Clipse, Kelis, N*E*R*D, Robin Thicke, Snoop and more.
Nicole’s time with The Neptunes was followed by her being brought on to work with the super producer Rich Harrison (Beyonce “Crazy in Love”, Destiny Child “Soldier”, “Amerie “One Thing”. J-Lo “Get Right”) in a marketing capacity at his newly launched joint venture, Richcraft/ Atlantic Records. There she learned the art of artist development - helping to assemble girl group Richgirl (alongside the tutelage of the master-mind behind Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Diddy - choreographer/creative director Laurieanne Gibson) that went on to hit the r&b/hip-hop charts and eventually tour with Beyonce as her openers.
Driven by her love of the record making process and artist development she took her talents to Los Angeles when she was tapped for a Writer-Publisher role at BMI. During her time there she immersed herself in LA’s burgeoning artist scene. In the effort to highlight this exciting energy she introduced and produced the showcase “Next Fresh Thing” where she featured emerging artists such as as Miguel, Dom Kennedy, Hit-Boy (Surf Club), Big Sean and Priscilla Renea (now known as Muni Long). She also signed artists and producers such as Nipsey Hussle, Schoolboy Q, Jhene Aiko, Earl Sweatshirt and a Drake go-to producer T-Minus to name a few.
The broad, well rounded knowledge gained in her previous roles led to her being sought out by those looking to grow their companies and brands. Her time at BMI was followed by an opportunity to help expand and re-brand the independent label, Rostrum Records (home to Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller) alongside its president and founder Benjy Grinberg. During this time she oversaw the curation and growth of a roster reflective of emerging sounds in the US and across the pond. Her time there came to an end at the beginning of the global pandemic.
Fortunately, another incredible opportunity would come her way. By the beginning of 2021 Nicole was offered the opportunity to come on as General Manager to award-winning producer, director and screenwriter Kenya Barris’ (“black-ish”, “grown-ish”, #Blackaf , “You People” etc) newly launched label venture Khalabo Music in partnership with Interscope.
Here, she currently works along-side Barris and his tv/film team in bridging the art of storytelling and music and is excited about what is to come.
Nicole’s multi-cultural background and artistic roots as well as activist spirit are what will always drive her to combine music, passion and purpose. She is intent on continuing to do so whether it’s alongside other visionaries or in building her own platform. Nicole is also the founder and host of the podcast Soeur Lab which highlights creative, visionary womxn who are setting trends and pushing boundaries from behind the scenes.
